Piercing number 7 received a pretty wide range of reactions, from “Oh wow! Funky shit!!” from Best Friend (and fellow piercing-pissa) to, “Aiyo geniye!! Why do you do this to yourself??!” to, just a look at my ears and a massive roll of eyes from most others.
I got number 7 when exam stress reached its highest point and I felt like I abso-positiv-olutely had to get it done. All 7 are on the ears, this perera not having the nerve, the finances or the moral support to get it elsewhere (elsewhere being nose and stomach). The Best Friend vehemently opposes the nose, and the stomach requires more money than I can currently spare and more work on my stomach than I’m willing to do. So they will have to wait for later.
Why do I do this to myself? Because I like it. I think piercings are “funky shit!!” (though I’m not a fan of the eyebrow, tongue or chin piercing, or the more “adventurous” places) It’s not something I “do to myself” like I would, say, slit my wrists. It’s something I do like I would buy clothes or shoes. Only, this is more permanent and comes with a bit of pain. I wanted to get a second piercing since I was about 7-8 when I saw a family friend wear 2 pairs of earrings. 2 piercings became 4, then 6 and now it’s 7. I think that’s enough for the ears, don’t you? Lol.
The “*cringe* I of course can’t bear such pain” line is one I get from almost everyone. Well, I’m no lover of pain either. I have a pretty low threshold of pain actually. Can’t stand injections, and blood tests are a nightmare because not only do I get a pointy metal thing jabbed into me, I also get sickeningly red liquid sucked out of me. uuurgh..Shudder. But the sensation of getting a piercing (I’m talking about ears here. Not qualified to talk about other places. Yet) is different. It hurts at the moment it’s done. Of course it hurts. For crying out loud, you’re getting a hole punched into your ears. To say that it doesn’t would be bull crap. But after a while, it stops hurting. With proper after care it’ll be fine in a few days (or weeks). Nothing to fuss about, really.
Best Friend pierced her own ears once. I tried but only got as far as marking the spots on the ear lobes. As much as I like piercings, I can’t get myself to push a needle through my own ears. Or anyone else’s. That is taking it too far for me. I trust the guy at La Passion down Havelock Road to do the needful. 350 bucks is all it takes for both ears. He takes about 10 minutes and uses the gun, so it’s over before you realize. And so far, I haven’t had a problem with infections any piercings I got from there either.
Pundits and people in general who know more about psychology and needy behaviour have said that piercing and tattoos and all sorts of body art are a cry for attention. (Actually, I think I first heard that on CSI when Grissom said something to that effect.) As far as I’m aware, I’m not crying for attention. But hey, what do I know, I’m just a lowly piercing-pissa who likes getting holes punched into my self =)
ps - is it "piercing" or "piercings" in the plural, does anyone know? i never figured that out..

isnt that a lotta weight on your ear? structurally... can your ear support that much external loading before it starts deforming?
well to me...
piercings => "look how much pain i'm inflicting on myself"
thus i've got zero piercings...
Well, I wouldn't say a piercing is THAT bad, as in excruciating pain. Also, An earring would have to weigh at least 15g to deform your ear. That's 15x7......105g. That's not much, and you won't be wearing them all the time. And it would all have to be on one ear.
You go girl! A guy in my class has piercings too, and i'm pretty sure he's not calling for help...
okay thats from a stationery frame of reference... but if you're in an accelerating frame of reference... like when you're going up a lift or when you're in a car taking a bend... there will be a lotta inertia forces acting on your ear... even as you move your head...
and depending on the acceleration... the 15g on your ear would feel heavier than 15g...
hmmm
shehal, you have got to be the most pathetic loser in this whole planet. You are either
(a)Saying all that nonsense in earnest
or
(b) It is your idea of being funny.
Either way, you end up a loser.
Hmm.. I've got both ears, eyebrow and labret (under the lip) pierced. Man I had so much trouble with this shit. One morning I woke up to find my barbell fallen off and I spent the whole day trying to put it in. When I go to work I have to put bandaids all over my face.
Anywayz it's cool. That's all that matters.
The labret hurt the most. My mouth was literally full of blood. The funny thing is that I can't kiss coz it's got a pointy end. It's so funny.
My piercing guy says all the law chicks at my uni get piercings down under. lol..
I love shopping for jewellery on ebay. I'm trying for a black-steel/CZ ensemble.
hmm...talking about piercings, I saw one this weekend in Vegas...wow...wasn't sure whether to cringe or drool...
since u already left a note stating you aint goin to get adventurours with ur eyebrow, ill leave u to it. but do check out mine ;-) n leave a comment..u shud find a post on piercing in the archives..
care to post up pics on ur piercings?!?!?
Btw, shehal is a nice enough guy, but he's quite positively the ugliest man I've ever seen. No shit... I was in one of his graphic or whatever design classes at Joe's school. The man is hideous.
No amount of piercings is going to make him look good, perhaps that's why he's so bitter.
Btw, I didn't realise you were that fat cow's twin. You're way cooler than her though.
everyone who thinks piercings are cool, thank you, i'm with you. great minds, after all...:)
just mal - me have much respect for you. even the thought of a pierced eyebrow and chin makes me break out in a cold sweat. as for law chicks getting there nether regions pierced, this law chick shall stay well away from that..lol. i'm not sure who you were referring to when you were talking about a cow but just for the record i don't have a twin. if you were talking about shehal, well.. let's keep the comments civilized shall we, without getting personal..
lost soul - will check your post out when i have more time.. my piercings are pretty standard actually, 3 on each ear lobe and another on the left that's a bit higher. i'm sure there's a name for it but i have no clue. will see if i can get around to putting some pics up.
n - ;)
bear
i was analyzing the forces acting on ones ear with rings on them... if you dont get it then i guess that part of your brain needs development...
just mal
i sympathize with you... i really do... 'cos you've killed a lotta brain cells during piercings... due to the intense pain... leaving only an infinitesimal number of brain cells... which makes you fantasizing about me in piercings... i know it turns you on... but i'm much uglier than you think... so get off fantasizing about something else... like the prime minister in piercings or something...
ms perera
ma'am i'm really sorry about the agitation...
hehe it's strange how I do it for the pain and you don't and still we are both equally crazy about them huh? lol. at least it looks as if people were actually able to read your post from top to bottom. and I belive it's piercings, otherwise the plural just doesn't sound right. I have decided where I want the 9th and 10th so 26th of July is definitely a date ;)
"My piercing guy says all the law chicks at my uni get piercings down under. lol..">>>>> WHICH University is this now? Please do tell...
I think the pain's a turn on, but more with tats than piercings (I've got both). I guess with the latter it's over so fast whereas with tats it can take hours. I once watched this friend of mine get inked (on her hip) and everytime the needle went in I could see her nipples get hard.
I think tats are cooler though, 'cos they're more extreme. Unlike a piercing you can never get rid of them (without a lot of pain). I've got both ears done and used to have an eyebrow ring ('til it got ripped off in a pub) and another about four inches below my navel.
Just letting you know that your blog post Piercings = look at me, I’m here? appears on the Lakbima English edition for July 8 2007.
Rhythmic and I got posts about it.
Thanks for interesting article.
Excellent website. Good work. Very useful. I will bookmark!
